I've visited Orejen again last week and everytime I'm there I fall in love with this amazing shop. Here's their story...
When I think back over the more or less year and a half that I've known Jennifer and Manuel from Orejen I don't think so much of their wonderful shop, but of a beautiful morning standing in the backyard eating apricots and plums straight off the tree. Another day the walnuts were just right and there we were again, picking and breaking and eating and talking, talking, talking. And I think of the way Jen's face just lights up when she talks about a new product or project or person she met. They are passionate people and Orejen definitely is a passion for them.
The main focus of the shop is wonderful windows and doors made of reclaimed oregon pine, but they also have an extensive collection of antique and replica door and window fittings, lightfittings, furniture, accessories and everything else you can think of. The shop and backyard are packed full of character pieces. Jen and Manuel are proudly South African and does their best to support local people and products, from handmade tiles to handforged bathroom accessories. A lot of their products are also rescued from old buildings that are being destroyed, and other pieces are rare finds, like the original slave bell that they have mounted in an oregon frame (see picture on left) which is currently in the shop.
They also do a lot of freestanding kitchen and cupboard units, and their big old farmhouse tables just calls out for a long "kuier" session.
So if you are restoring an old building or starting from scratch, and you are looking for pieces that will really give your space character, head over to Orejen. You will fall instantly in love with the place, and hopefully the plums or apricots will be just right...
